Anyway in the process of changing over the chrome engine covers, I dislodged the gear shifter shaft. Sadly to get it back in place I had to remove the primary driver and clutch to get at it. I really hadn't intended to pull the clutch apart. However on inspection most of the steel plates were blued to some degree, indicating to me there's been some slipping going on. Also evidence on the friction plates. No substantial warpage evident. Friction plates just under spec, okay I'll put it back together get the engine into the bike and order new ones. Put the plates back in the order they came out, with reference to the manual, specifically regarding the Note, "The outer most friction plate is different to the remainder. It must not be fitted in any other position ". Seemed a bit odd as it meant the inner most plate was riding on the "anti judder " spring. I have both engines on the bench so I checked the old one, I know the service history of that one as it's always been me. The clutch has been unmolested since new. The different friction plate goes on the innermost position to clear the anti judder spring. I'm guessing the clutch in the storm has been apart at some stage, there's some evidence the friction plates have been fiddled with. It appears to have been put back together according to the manual with not great results. Anyway take the info for what it's worth. Pete

(Found a few errors over the years; my manual is an early one, with remains of a shaft drive and bevel box before Triumph went to a belt.) BTW, I've become a big fan of photographing disassembly, it has saved my bacon more than once.

Lee, mine is a very early version, but out of curiosity I will check a later one. There's a few differences between mine, 2009 and the storm 2012.

Looks like drawing above was copied from one at beginning of clutch section, which makes more sense:
Manual is copyright 2009

I think the problem I found is the anti judder spring is meant to only bear on the steel plates. However if you fit a normal friction plate in the clutch basket first the spring gets trapped between the friction plate and the basket. The one called the outer friction plate has a larger id that clears the spring, allowing the friction plate to sit properly against the clutch basket. As I said earlier, take this information for what it's worth and make your own decisions. This is what I found and what I did to correct the problem as I perceived it.

(Re: peteronkarra) | | Pete I just read Dr Moomans section on the clutch and found this, very interesting__ Now remove all the clutch plates, steel plates,anti-judder seat washer and spring. Keep the orientation of all the parts the same . So remove them in order and placement down in that order. In particular, don't confuse the outer friction platewith the others because it is different from therest. If you need to remove the clutch basket thenthe details are in the official Triumph manual. Inthe original Triumph manual the outer friction plate is different from the rest but in the updated manual in 2013 the friction plate that is differentis the inner one, as was the case on my 2012 Storm.

I was running out of adjustment so I installed a new clutch pack and it didn't feel a lot different. From memory only one plate measured under spec.
